The original Kaal Bhairav Temple in Ujjain was built by King Bhadrasen. The temple is located on the banks of the Shipra River. The temple is dedicated to Kal Bhairav, the leader of the eight Bhairavs. The temple was built between the 9th and 13th centuries. Images of Shiva, Parvati, Vishnu, and Ganesha from the Paramara period (9th–13th century CE) were found at the temple. The temple walls were once decorated with beautiful Malwa-style paintings, but only traces of them remain. The temple is part of the Shaivite tradition, and is mainly worshipped by the Kapalika and Aghora sects. Ujjain was a prominent center of these sects. As part of the ritual, liquor is offered to Kal Bhairav. Some say that when offering liquor to Kal Bhairav, one should dedicate all their bad habits to the god and resolve to follow the path of good.
