On Mahashivratri (26th Feb), perform Special Abhishek at Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple where Lord Shiva visits here to rest at night after traveling through the three realms. Your name, gotra and powerful hymns/mantras will be chanted along with the offerings. On this day, the significance of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga increases because Lord Shiva and Parvati are said to play chausar (Indian board game) here on an Om-shaped hill by the banks of the Narmada River.

Mahashivratri is not just a festival; it is a day that represents Lord Shiva’s infinite love and sacrifice. On this day, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati, symbolizing the union of Shiva and Shakti. It is also believed that on this day, Lord Shiva consumed the poison that emerged from the samudra manthan to protect the entire universe. That’s why worshipping on this day brings the blessings of both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Among the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is unique because Lord Shiva visits here to rest at night after traveling through the three realms. According to beliefs, Mahadev also plays a game of Chausar with Goddess Parvati in this temple. That’s why, every night, a game board is set up, and surprisingly, by morning, the dice and board are found scattered. At Omkareshwar, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the forms of Mamleshwar and Amleshwar. According to religious beliefs, there are 68 sacred pilgrimage sites around the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, and it is said that Lord Shiva resides here along with 33 crore deities.”
